Cook raw food together?

Cassondra Vanholland: Why would it not be safe? It is all being cooked, correct?

Monica Voltin: There are many dishes that call for beef, chicken and shrimp to be cooked together in one pot, Paella comes to mind. I would braise the beef first and cook it for a bit then add the chicken and wait till your are almost ready to serve to fry the shrimp separately then add it in or it will get rubbery. As far as long term or flavor or bacteria issue in the future.. alway wash your pots, pans and cutting boards and wipe with vinegar. The exception is Cast iron where after washing you put it in the oven or on the stove after wiping with cooking oil.Part of the beauty of a cast iron pan is that it will "perk" the flavors from past meals....Show more

Mayola Sylva: Different animals are known for different diseases. E coli in beef, and Salmonella in chicken. If you make sure to cook to 165 degrees F, cooking everything in the same pot is fine. If you are a safety fanatic,! then it is not a crazy idea to cook raw meats separately, though a lot more work.I'm assuming you are cooking some dish with two different kinds of meats, not cooking different dishes, one after another in the same pan. That would be a bad idea, and you should use fresh pans for a fresh dish.165F is the safety net in cooking all meats, killing most famous and dangerous bacteria and pathogens....Show more

Sammy Hatzenbihler: Yes from a health prospective. But, to avoid overcooking the cooked meat, cook the bacon first. In your 2nd example, Many classic dishes use that technique with pate and raw meat. Beef Wellington would be an example of that technique

Shamika Schools: Common sense tell me that there is no reason on safety grounds not to as long as they are both cooked through.A problem will arise if it is a tough old piece of mutton and chicken breasts, as the time the breasts are cooked the mutton will not be and if you wait until the mutton is cooked the ch! icken would be overcooked....Show more

Samatha Nicar: co! ok them seperatly, or wash the pan after cooking each one.if your doing a dish to where it involves different meats cook one ata time and then combine. its safer and better, becuz you donthave the bad after flavor. like chicken tasting like fish?
